about

I return to this familiar genre of song either because pretty little fingerpicking melodies in the key of D seem natural to me, or perhaps because they're increasingly easy for me to write. There's nothing wrong with writing in a way that feels easy. These well worn chords slip over my fingers like an old pair of gloves. The frets are starting to become discolored where I play them. I sat with Rebecca in the evening and picked at this song while the dusk fell over the pond in Prospect Park. That place has a way of fooling me -- even my well honed country sensibilities have trouble recognizing the city beyond when I watch the dusk-light dance over the water. But it is ever there, throbbing in the background. The fields and flowers, stunning though they are, amount to little more than illusion; double exposures momentarily obscuring the true nature of my surroundings. That's perfectly fine with me, though. It makes me a little uneasy, but I'm so glad they're here for us. I thought about calling this song Prospect Park, but my stomach turned at the notion of pandering to Brooklyn's ever-increasing cultural capital ("Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in" indeed). Nonetheless, I wrote this song for the realness and make-believe of that particular place. Thanks for listening.

lyrics

Beg the chill
Return to me
Relieve my brow
And let me sleep
I'm restless
I won't sleep

Dusk
The only light I see
It moves me darling
To my feet
Embrace you
On our feet

Distant drums
And voices call
Old and kind
Against these walls
They echo
Off the walls

So who will brave the night severe?
Who will guard these canyon walls?
Who will know what happened here?
Who will stand if night should fall?

Morning light
Don't punish me
You test my patience
Constantly
Your beauty
Beckons me

I walk the earth
A bag of bones
Mismatched parts
I creak and groan
My limbs
They creak and groan

City washed
In morning dew
The hobby drones
Watch over you
They hover
Over you

But who will brave the night severe?
Who will guard these canyon walls?
Who will know what happened here?
Who will stand if night should fall?
