about

Sometimes when I'm walking in the evening, and the windows start to light up all around me, I'm tempted to cast my eyes into the private spaces that line any given block. You can catch glimpses, just mere suggestions of the lives lived within. It's fascinating, but It always strikes me after a moment that I'm peering into somebody else's interiority, into a space that isn't mine, into a world where I likely don't belong. This is a song about searching for one's own space. Perhaps you have never found it, but you know that it's out there if you keep looking. Maybe you're returning there after some time away. Maybe it's an ordinary day, and you're just on your way home.

lyrics

In the evening
All the window lights turn on

Look inside them
Look away
We don't belong

You could count them
All the way to where you're going

They're behind you
Back from where your wind is blowing

The windows of my eyes light up
The moment you arrive

I've been with you
All the way from where you've been

Right beside you
First away
Then back again

The windows of my eyes light up
The moment you arrive
