about

Notes: Rebecca and I often talk about the ways that living in Brooklyn has changed us over nearly a decade. We agree that the most evident change is that we have become far less patient. Frustration bubbles when any person even momentarily obstructs our paths. We aren't forgiving of people who take their time, no matter what their reasons may be. It's a shitty attitude to hold toward other people. There are so many good reasons that any given person might need to take their time. This frustration has become more evident as we have navigated recent trips to visit friends outside of the city. It's good that things are slower elsewhere, but there's a culture shock. Will we always be like this? Years after we have left Brooklyn, will I quietly rage in the produce section as another customer chooses their perfect avocado, oblivious to the importance of my time? God, I hope not.

lyrics

What's up with city folk?
There's always something in their way
A stride unstoppable
An object without delay

I once lived by staying still
I practiced serenity
I learned the space between heartbeats
City what have you done to me

The first strains of songs of the night
Take in the sound of the fading light
Close your eyes

I guess we're city folk
Will I take it with me?
Can I be a patient man?
Can I still sit and be?

The first strains of songs of the night
Take in the sound of the fading light
Close your eyes
